IMPLEMENTATION OF BIOPHILIC DESIGN

The presence of mosses and plants in general in interiors has, according to various studies, a positive effect on humans in the following areas:

  • Emotional stress/anxiety: mitigation of stress in the nurse/client relationship, reduction of depressive symptoms in ill clients, mitigation of work stress of employees.
  • Subjective well-being: mood improvement, wellness function of greenery.
  • Cognitive performance: reduction of functional decline in seniors.

Creation of vertical walls from stabilized moss and live plants – we set ourselves the task of addressing the persistent lack of greenery and natural materials in general inside the buildings of organizations providing social services. This deficiency is one of the factors causing the psychological distress of employees (frustration, burnout syndrome...), which has a direct influence on seniors. The lack of greenery in organizations providing social services is also related to the proportion of oxygen and carbon dioxide in buildings. Since seniors are sensitive to temperature changes, ventilation is not as frequent as it should be. As a result, there is a lack of oxygen and an excess of carbon dioxide, which is harmful to health (long-term it can cause headaches, dizziness, respiratory problems, tremors, confusion, and increased anxiety). Moss cleans the air, thus helping to maintain the correct ratio of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Overall, the presence of moss demonstrably has a direct influence on the quality of life of both seniors and employees.
